Those two articles have a lot of great info on the setup of the Alexa app and Amazon Echo, and they include some fantastic tips and tricks you can use as well.

However, if you already know everything you need for installing the Amazon Alexa Echo app but you’re encountering an issue with Alexa not responding when you say the device’s wake word, try these quick troubleshooting steps.

First and foremost, check your internet access. An internet outage could be the cause and simply using another device such as a tablet, smartphone, or computer to test the Wi-Fi connection can confirm or exclude this possibility.

If those devices are connected but the Echo is not, follow these steps to complete setup of the Alexa app. On your smartphone, tablet, notebook, or computer, open the Alexa app and select the Devices icon.

Select Amazon Echo

Tap Wi-Fi, select your correct network, and enter the password if prompted. Power off both the router and modem.
Wait 30 seconds and restart the modem.

After it is completely powered up, restart the router.

Once your Wi-Fi connection is established, restart the Echo. As an extra bonus tip: check your modem and router for available firmware updates.

If you’re still having issues or the above doesn’t cover what you’re experiencing, try the following:

Make sure your device has power. When it comes to knowing how to setup an Amazon Echo properly, you should always remember to plug the power adapter into the Echo first, then the power outlet, before powering on the device.

Check the light ring. If it is solid red, the microphone is off and simply needs powered on.

If Alexa is still unresponsive, try these steps:

Turn off all other devices that are connected to Wi-Fi.

Relocate the device closer to the wireless router, but away from metal objects, microwaves, walls, and other possible sources of interference.

Power off the modem.

Power off the router.

Wait 30 seconds and restart the modem.

Once it is completely powered up, restart the router.

Restart the Echo and retest. Knowing how to setup an Amazon Echo and how to setup the Alexa app doesn’t take much time to learn at all, you just need the right educational material.
